Most of the times diagnosis of basic congestion in lungs can be done by a pulmonologist using a stethescope. However there are conditions which requires the lung specialist to see inside the lungs of the patient. The procedure of looking inside the lungs through a scope is called bronchoscopy. Non-invasive radiological tests like Chest X-Ray or CT Scan of the Chest are always done before going for Bronchoscopy.
Bronchoscope can be either flexible or rigid. A rigid bronchoscope is a straight tube and is only used in seeing the larger airways. A Flexible bronchoscope is a flexible long tube which can visualize smaller airways deep inside the lungs. Flexible brnchoscopy is more common and can be used in maximum number of cases. In both the cases the tube is inserted through either mouth or nose under light sedation.
Rigid bronchoscopy is generally used :
To remove secretions in the lungs
To control pleural bleeding
To remove foreign objects
To remove tissues or lesions
To perform stenting procedures
The flexible broncoscopy is done:
To intubate or ventilate a patient i.e. to put a breathing tube to help patient breathe
To suck out secretions from the smaller airways of lungs
To perform bronchoscopic biopsy
To put medicines directly into the lungs

Using the bronchoscope, your doctor can view all of the structures that make up your respiratory system. These include your larynx, trachea and the smaller airways of your lungs, which include the bronchi and bronchioles. Bronchoscopy may be advised:

Bronchosopy is done on day care basis, means you will be admitted and discharged the same day. You will have to come in fasting and the procedure would be done in operation theatre under the effect of anaesthesia. In case Dr Kuldeep Kumar plans a biopsy then the tissue taken out would be sent to the lab and the results would be available in 3 to 5 days.
