THORACOSCOPY PROCEDURE

Thoracoscopy is a diagnostic and sometimes theraputic procedure performed by a lung specialist or pulmonologist. The lung specialist performing this procedure should be trained in performing invasive procedures. The purpose of thoracosopy procedure is to look in the space inside the chest but outside the lungs. There is another procedure called bronchoscopy which is also performed by the lung specialist. The difference in thoracoscopy and bronchoscopy is that in bronchoscopy pulmonologist will see inside the lungs unlike thoracoscopy where the specialist doctor sees outside the lungs. This is also part of Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery. Thoracoscopy is done with a thoracoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a light and a small video camera on the end. The tube is put in through a small cut made near the lower end of the shoulder blade between the ribs.

Thoracoscopy can be a good option for people who are not good candidates for open surgery due to health concerns. However, it may not be appropriate for people who have had chest surgery previously.
